Shaftesbury Avenue

Shaftesbury Avenue is generally considered the heart of London's theatre district, understandable when you consider the number of theatres in such close proximity; the Gielgud, Lyric, Apollo, Queen's, Palace and Shaftesbury Theatres are all found on this stretch. Named after the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury and built in the late 19th century it is one of London’s major roads and was part of a slum clearance measure to push impoverished workers out of the city centre. Shaftesbury Avenue is also the beginning of London Chinatown and the number of Chinese businesses has been rapidly increasing with a number of traditional medicine practices, restaurants, supermarkets, travel agents, mobile phone shops, hair salons, banks, fishmongers…the list goes on!
