For one hundred years the Whitechapel Gallery has been responsible for introducing the world's best artists to London's East End. The roll-call of famous names is impressive: Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Frida Kahlo, along with modern luminaries like Mark Wallinger and Gilbert & George. Back in 2009, an ambitious £13 million expansion saw the Whitechapel almost double in size, cementing its position as a keystone in the capital's art scene. The new Collection gallery draws art from around the world, and there are now yearly commissions and an Archive Research Room telling the story of the local area. Angela Hartnett at the Whitechapel Gallery Dining Room offers the perfect excuse to prolong your visit until lunch.
