Wellcome Collection

‘A free destination for the incurably curious’ is their tagline and pretty close to the mark. The Collection was founded by philanthropist and pharmacist Henry Wellcome. An irrepressible creator with an early interest in medicine and marketing, he even concocted his own brand of invisible ink. His collection spans the gaps between medicine, life and art, and contains often grisly curios from Chinese torture chairs to Napoleon’s toothbrush. The permanent exhibitions – Medicine Man and Medicine Now – include fascinating objects form teaching skulls to tribal masks, and the temporary exhibitions are not to be missed. (The vast café, connected to the bookshop, is an ideal place to reflect on what you’ve seen.)
