The Whispering Gallery

Set inside the magnificence of St Paul’s cathedral, The Whispering Gallery is set 99 feet from the base of the building, inside its glorious golden dome roof. Visitors will have to climb 257 steps to reach the gallery, which has been referred to as a ‘happy accident’ that has proven to be a hit with millions of tourists for decades.

Looking down from the gallery you can see the cathedral floor below, and although Sir Christopher Wren didn’t design the walkway to enhance its acoustic abilities, but it soon became noticed in the 1700s that a simple whisper sent along the curved wall could be heard by anyone standing further along. This simple discovery has earned it a nickname that is tested out daily by almost every visitor who enters.
