One of London’s most popular galleries for modern and contemporary art, the Serpentine is responsible for commissioning an annual pavilion that decorates its lawns and acts as a showcase for contemporary architecture, not to mention distracting the press and public for a few months every summer. The free temporary exhibitions are a chance to get to grips with icons of the modern day, and shows have included Yayoi Kusama and photographer Juergen Teller. The gallery’s talks and events never fail to attract art world celebrities and their acolytes, while the branch of Koenig Books here is one of the best places to browse art tomes in town. In 2012, the Serpentine’s new Sackler Gallery opens in The Magazine building nearby.
