Tower of London

Founded in late 1066, during the Norman Conquest, the Tower of London has played a key role in English history, serving as a royal residence, the home of the Royal Mint and a prison.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, disgraced figures like the young Elizabeth I would be 'sent to the Tower', thereby coining the famous phrase. Today its major draw is the Crown Jewels, including the Imperial State Crown worn by the Queen at each State Opening of Parliament. Brave the crowds here, before marvelling at Henry VIII's royal armour, or heading to the Brick Tower where Royal Beasts tell the story of the lions, tigers and elephants who were kept in the Tower for the court's entertainment.
