Shakespeare's Globe

Founded by the American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, this reconstruction of the Globe Theatre – the setting for many of Shakespeare’s first plays – lies close to the site of the original theatre, which burnt down in 1613. Dedicated to exploring the Bard’s work, the Globe mark two has gone from strength to strength, with the World Shakespeare Festival in 2012 seeing companies from all around the world perform his plays in their own languages. From April to September, the venue runs a full programme of theatre, with the open-air yard (standing only) offering the most authentic approximation of the original experience. Beneath the theatre there is an excellent exhibition on Shakespeare’s London, while regular tours explain the thinking behind the reconstruction.
