Hampton Court Palace

Henry VIII’s pleasure palace welcomed some of the most famous Britons of all time, from Shakespeare to Oliver Cromwell, who moved in after winning the Civil War. The fifth of Henry’s six wives, Catherine Howard, is even said to hover over the Haunted Gallery. In 2010, a reconstruction of a wine fountain uncovered in one of the courtyards began serving refreshments – but it doesn’t hold a candle to the excess of Henry’s feasts, jousting tournaments, and plays. These days, there are Tudor cooking demonstrations in the kitchens, and an annual flower show in the late 17th century gardens – the oldest in the country. Children will adore the maze, while over 12s can participate in rooftop tours (these must be booked in advance).
