Chelsea Physic Garden
As the oldest botanic garden in London, the Chelsea Physic Garden is a rich resource for plant lovers with almost 5,000 variants that are either edible, medicinal or herbal. Spread across four acres, the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries established the garden in 1673 near to the Thames, taking advantage of the warm air currents it provides.
Although over 400 years old, it remained out of sight to the public for most of its existence, until it was opened in 1983 for the first time. Due to its microclimate the garden has grown plants not usually found outside in the UK, with the largest fruiting olive tree in the UK standing tall as one of its prized possessions. It also proudly boasts the oldest English rock garden dedicated solely to alpine plants.
