Foster and Partners’ office for the Mayor and London Assembly was an attempt at sustainable architecture, hence its bulbous shape. Dubbed ‘The Onion’ by Boris Johnson, it hosts the monthly Mayor’s Question Time, which is open to the public and frequent exhibits relating to London topics in the second floor exhibition space. On selected weekends, it is possible to visit areas of City Hall that are normally closed to the public, from the panoramic London’s Living Room on the ninth floor, to the Assembly Chamber. Outside, an 800-seater amphitheatre called The Scoop is a popular meeting point, and it runs a free programme of open-air music performances, theatre and film throughout the summer.
