ZSL London Zoo
A trip to London Zoo is a rite of passage for schoolchildren, and many return as adults with their own kids in tow. The central London idyll was opened in 1847, and houses over 760 animal species, from endangered birds to the deadly snakes in the famous Reptile House.
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by Penguin Beach: Lubetkin’s sumptuous penguin pool, which preceded it, was found to give penguins arthritis, although it now remains as a water feature surrounded by a glut of cafés. Kids can also pick between a rainforest exhibit filled with monkeys and sloths, the ‘Gorilla Kingdom’, regular animal feedings, and terrifying Komodo Dragons. There are special children’s days and an ongoing programme of exhibitions and events.
